There will also be other hospitality leaders there as well! We’ve invited people from all over our vast network of business partners so there will be no shortage of new networking opportunities!

‘Startup of the Year’ in New Orleans Is A Game Changer for New Tech Companies

Startup of the year.

A competition to sort out the most innovative start-ups in the country. 1 year long. 100 companies. $100K prize. Phenomenal networking. Fantastic opportunities for the winner.

 

In early March, Gravy went to SXSW to pitch at Start-Up of the Year. The results of the event in and of itself were uncanny to us. We met so many new people, companies, and leaders; it was incredibly exciting to be a part of that event! The people on the StartUp of the Year team and Established team were terrific! We are now taking our next step with Startup of the year at New Orleans!

 

That’s right! We are pitching in New Orleans on the 30th of April! Gravy is humbled to be given another opportunity to be a part of this remarkable series of events. There are booths with exciting displays and fresh promotional products! We loved hanging out there and meeting all the other companies.

The people! –

All of the people involved are what truly makes these events amazing! There are all kinds of entrepreneurs, product builders, designers, etc. hanging around and networking. It really is the event to be at for anything creative or business related!

 

Energy-

There is always awesome energy when a bunch of ideas and people come together to celebrate or network with each other. Startup of the Year embodies this idea at its core. The energy around being with different ideas and innovations is fantastic.

What is Startup Of The Year?

 

Every year SXSW in Austin, Texas holds a competition for some of the most innovative and exciting startups in the nation. The winner gets the title of Startup of the year and becomes a Startup legend.

 

Who is going to be there?

Twenty-five incredible companies of high caliber performance including Gravy! Many of the companies pitching during this event are software companies disrupting the way specific industries operate. How have we been preparing?

Here at Gravy, we’ve been getting ready for a few weeks in advanced just because we are so excited to be involved! We’ve been doing everything from making posters, getting merch, and creating an ongoing countdown. We even had an internal mock event in our HQ to simulate the event as close as possible!

Also, shout-out to our amazing team for giving endless feedback and suggestions for our pitch improvement!

 

Our Marketing Manager, Product Manager, and CEO will all be going down to the event to participate in the startup festivities. Once in Austin, they will pitch Gravy to the 30 judges and hundred’s of people who have come to SXSW. The first pitch is a 1-minute pitch where all the competitors will go back to back with their pitches. From there, a select few competitors will go onto a 3-minute pitch and get the opportunity to pitch to the judges again for a chance to get entered into the mega startup of the year event which will have the top 100 startups in the nation.

 

We look forward to seeing all the great talent and innovative ideas there!

What is Saucepitality?

What is saucepitality?

 

Simply put, saucepitality is Gravy’s secret sauce (shout out to sales guy Jeff for the name!). Gravy’s saucepitality is the reason why hotel and restaurant managers love us and why hospitality pros can’t stay off of the Gravy app.

Gravy as able to do a complete redesign of the way that the hospitality industry hires staff.

 

Why?

 

Because our in-house team of accountants, marketers, developers, and sale’s people is all industry veterans. Before we threw on our suits, we threw on an apron, got behind the dish pit, or cooked delicious food. Actually, every month, our in-house team works a job out in the field so that we always stay true to our restaurant roots.

 

Side note: Our CEO, Alex Atwood, has a pretty insane story of how he got started. We will save that for another time though.

 

We get asked all the time why we don’t service jobs for handymen or drivers, and the truth is…we just enjoy being true experts in our services. In the future, if we want to expand into those types of jobs, we’ll make sure to have the expert knowledge and experience, but for now, we’ll stick to what we know. We know hospitality. We love hospitality. We live in saucepitality.

A little bit about Dara H., Gravy pro from Maryland

We sat down with 11 year bartending veteran, Dara H., to find out more about why our pros choose Gravy.

When did you work your first hospitality job with us and why?

I got started in 2008 after seeing your newspaper ad and I really wanted a job that would work around my main job. I work 9-5 as a Hiring Manager, but I really wanted something that allowed me to interact with people even more and get me out from behind a desk. My first job was bartending at the Marriot Hotel and I have been Gravying 2-3 times per week ever since.

What are your favorite types of jobs from the Gravy app?

Definitely bartending at major events. Last New Years Eve, I bartended at the Hyatt and it was so much fun! It was such a beautiful event and working at major events like that feels very rewarding.

What are you doing when you aren’t picking up shifts with Gravy?

I went to college for Music Theory with a minor in Psychology and music has always been a passion of mine. I play guitar and am a singer/songwriter. Tracy Chapman and Alanis Morissette are two of my biggest influences.

What do you like most about Gravy?

The community. Everyone who works in their main office knows my name. I love working shifts with other people from Gravy and being able to create my own schedule. Any other part time job would require me to work set hours, but with Gravy, if I want a weekend off, I don’t have to tell anyone.

8 Tips for an Unforgettable Dinner Party

It’s cold, you moved to a new house, you and your friends are due for a reunion, you got new dinnerware, there are so many reasons to host a dinner party at your home! Before you start calling up your guests, take these 8 tips in to account to make your dinner party unforgettable and have your invitees dub you the hostess of the year.

  1. Music.People often forget or underestimate music at dinner parties. Music will liven up the mood and have you covered in case of any awkward silences. Check out this Spotify playlist that Starbucks created for music inspiration: Starbucks Dinner Party Playlist
  2. Set the mood.Make sure your lighting and music are right for the occasion. Candles are always great but stray away from food scents for this. A good rule of thumb with lighting is dimmer = more intimate.
  3. Know your guests’ dietary restrictions.In today’s world of 154,820 diets, it may be impossible to please everyone, but if you invite them, then you should feed them. Make sure you have options for everyone. Check out these 5 delicious meals to feed nearly anyone.
  4. Entertain, don’t cook.This one is HUGE. You don’t want to greet your guests with a spatula in hand. Cook the meal ahead of time or leave it to the professionals. Hire a chef or use our app Gravy.Work (basically uber for hospitality workers) where you can hire pros to cook, clean, serve, or more in a few clicks. It’s never a bad idea to have extra hands!
  5. Give a tour!Make sure your guests are comfortable and know where the restroom is. Nothing breaks up a good conversation like having to ask to find the bathroom.
  6. Don’t underestimate appetizers!Until it is time to move into the dining room, have a few items like cheese, olives, crackers, and fruit.
  7. Play a game.This is a great way to break the ice or transition to party mode. Create a specialty cocktail and have the guests guess the ingredients throughout the night. Whoever gets it right wins a bottle of wine.
  8. Create an escape.Your guests love you (or they wouldn’t be there!), but it’s getting late and everyone has things to do. This tip is for your own sanity too. Give out a party favor like a candle, handout leftovers (if they request it), or wrap it up with a verbal invite to the next dinner.
